What glue to use for different types of fabric

Created12/7/2023

While sewing, everyone encountered the fact that the fabric was wrinkled in the seam, stretched where it was not supposed to, or the sewn piece hung strangely on us, but at the same time we did not make any mistakes while sewing. All of this can be prevented.

All you have to do is pick up an iron, adhesive reinforcement and start gluing problematic parts, strengthening and shaping them. After that, it will no longer happen to us that the neckline of the blouse will stick out, the collar will lie down, the lapel of the jacket will not hold its shape and we will not look like we just got wet in the coat.

Why strengthen fabrics with reinforcement

The main task of every reinforcement is to reinforce and strengthen , but at the same time the properties of the reinforced material must be retained. Therefore, it is important to always choose the appropriate reinforcement for the given material. For delicate materials, go for a reinforcement with a lower weight , which will keep the softness and airiness of the fabric. On the other hand, for costume and woolen materials, use stronger reinforcements that will hold the shape of, for example, lapels, collars or slits well. It may seem like great alchemy, but it's not.

A few tips to get you started:

  1. never use steam !!!

  2. do not change the temperature while ironing the adhesive insert

  3. if ironing is not possible - press more on the iron and extend the ironing time

  4. iron over a damp cloth or baking paper

  5. place the iron on the adhesive reinforcement

  6. after ironing, let the fabric cool down on a flat surface

  7. use the reinforcement designed for the given material so that the reinforced area is not too stiff

Types of adhesive reinforcements

Let's look together at the differences between iron-on inserts and adhesive strips , which are available on the e-shop in the haberdashery category and in brick-and-mortar stores.

Rusty adhesive insert

The rustling adhesive insert in black and white is a non-woven fabric with a higher proportion of viscose , which ensures the softness of this universal insert and has a single-sided adhesive . If necessary, it is possible to layer the adhesive insert on top of each other and thereby gain greater strength. It is especially suitable for full-surface fixation of the front parts of jackets and coats, but also for gluing pockets, underpants, shoulder straps, buttonholes and belts .

It is possible to wash the glued material with a rustling insert at a maximum temperature of 40°C and do not use a dryer to prevent it from peeling off and damaging it.

Gray and white lining

Vlizelin with one-sided spot or surface-applied glue in weights of 24 g/m2 and 33 g/m2 is one of the most versatile reinforcements with a wide range of uses , it is a soft and pliable material . The gluing lining insert is suitable for gluing light to medium-weight materials, pockets, necklines, collars and cuffs on blouses, or for gluing edges for reinforcement during sewing .

Fabrics glued with vlisene can be washed at a maximum temperature of 40°C , so that it does not come off and there is no loss of firmness during washing. We do not recommend using a dryer .

Adhesive fixing to the tape

As the name already suggests, this is an adhesive fixing intended for the waistband of trousers and skirts. The adhesive reinforcement is with one-sided applied glue and the sewn clothes can be washed at a maximum of 40°C to prevent the reinforcement from peeling off.

The binding to the tape has marked folds that lead to precise sewing and folding of the tape . We recommend first ironing the reinforcement onto the fabric , then using the indicated lines to fold and iron the strip . It will be easier for us to work with the tape and we will keep its exact shape.

Self-adhesive lining tapes

Lining adhesive tapes with one-sided adhesive are thin and do not add bulk to the fabric . The tapes are soft and you don't have to worry that the glued area will be thicker and unsightly marked. When stretching, we must be careful not to break them .

Adhesive tapes are ideal for places where we need to prevent the elasticity of the fabric, its waviness and stretching during sewing . It is a great helper when sewing a zipper into soft and flexible materials , sewing sleeves and sewing on straps with applications .

Double-sided adhesive tapes

The double-sided adhesive tape is suitable for elegantly finishing the lower lengths of skirts, trousers, jackets and coats . After sticking, there is no need to stitch the edges and your product will look like a luxurious piece from an expensive boutique.

Handling double-sided adhesive tape is easy. First, place the adhesive tape on the fabric with the paper side up and iron it with an iron . After cooling , remove the paper and place the other side of the fabric and iron . Leave to cool again on a flat surface.
